According to the International Standards Organization 2631-1 standard on human vibration, individuals in a seated position when exposed to whole-body vibrations (WBV) are at risk of injury. This study evaluated vibration exposure during manual and power wheelchair driving over nine sidewalk surfaces and differences in vibration exposure over 3 years. Ten nondisabled subjects were asked to drive a manual wheelchair at 1 m/s and a power wheelchair at 1 m/s and 2 m/s over nine sidewalk surfaces while WBV were measured at the seat and footrest of the wheelchair. At 1 m/s, significant differences existed between surfaces and years at both the seat and the footrest for the manual and power wheelchair users. At 2 m/s, significant differences existed between surfaces and years at the seat and the footrest for handicap scooters users. Our results show that both manual and power wheelchair users may be at risk for secondary injuries from WBV when traveling over certain surfaces

RESULTS: Wilcoxon signed-rank testing revealed shoulder power was larger for MAC versus SSS (median peak, 101.5W; interquartile range IQR, 74.6; median peak, 37.7W; IQR, 22.9; respectively) (P<.01). Elbow and wrist power were unchanged. Peak shoulder power fraction was larger for MAC versus SSS (median peak, 1.055; IQR, .110 vs peak, .870; IQR, .252) (P<.01). Peak elbow power fraction was smaller for MAC versus SSS (median peak, -.012; IQR, .144 vs peak, .146; IQR, .206) (P<.05). Despite these benefits, the risks associated with power mobility use raise serious concerns in residential facilities. PURPOSE: As there is no gold standard to assess when a client is unsafe, a two-phase study was conducted to develop client-centred guidelines for handicap scooters use. METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, other residents, staff and family members. RESULTS: A thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes: 1) the meaning of power mobility, 2) learning the rules of the road, 3) red flags: concerns about safety, and 4) solutions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Given the importance of power mobility, safety measures need to address issues of mobility and safety for power mobility drivers and those around them.
